History of SAVTA

When SAVTA was founded in 1986, locksmiths already had a national association. ALOA, established in 1955, had spent decades providing education, advocacy and a sense of identity for locksmiths and physical security professionals. But safe and vault technicians working with high-security containers, vault doors and combination locks still occupied an awkward corner of that world. Attempts to create a “safe man’s division of ALOA” had fizzled, even as contests and classes proved there was both interest and talent in the field. Information tended to travel through personal networks rather than through organized training or widely available literature, leaving many technicians to piece together education on their own. 

SAVTA Founder Clay Miller had been part of ongoing conversations with industry figures such as Leonard Singer and Locksmith Ledger editor Bill Reed about the need for a dedicated association. The idea kept resurfacing: Safe and vault technicians needed an organization built around their work alone.

The push toward formal organization accelerated when Miller acquired Professional Locksmithing Magazine, a move that gave him both a publishing platform and a stronger foothold in the trade’s communications network. He then gathered a small group to discuss creating something formal, and the Safe and Vault Technicians Association (SAVTA) was born. 

The mission was to further technical knowledge and help formally promote the profession. This was initially done via member-written technical bulletins, Safe & Vault Technology magazine (first published in 1986) and the annual SAFETECH Convention, first held in Los Angeles in February 1988 — all of which continue to this day.
